Village Hall Planters

Picture
Just outside Village Hall in downtown Lemont, you’ll find a series of mosaic-covered planters that blend art with everyday life.

Picture
The first public art project was the completion of the two mosaic planters in front of Village Hall. A workshop was facilitated by Rob Moriarty and community members discussed what should be included in the design to best represent our town. Rob Moriarty created the planters, and they were installed at Village Hall in the fall of 2004. Created as a demonstration of the possibilities while a new Art & Culture Commission was being proposed in 2004. The founding members of the new
village Commission who helped make these artworks were Alice Chin, educator and business owner, Mona Parry, educator and artist; Bev Raddle, student; Randy Vick, professor of art therapy; Mary Carnahan, artist and businesswoman; Rob Moriarty, educator and artist; and Emily Christian, artist and businesswoman. These planters are based on a simple idea: take something functional, then make people stop and smile when they walk by.

Where Art Meets the Everyday
These aren’t just containers for flowers. They’re part of the experience of downtown.
Placed in a high-visibility civic space, the planters:
  • Add color and texture to the streetscape
  • Create a welcoming, creative first impression
  • Encourage people to slow down and look around
It’s public art you don’t have to go looking for. It finds you.

Designed with Purpose
Each planter features hand-laid mosaic designs that reflect themes tied to Lemont’s identity, including:
  • Natural elements and seasonal color
  • Organic patterns inspired by growth and movement
  • Subtle nods to the village’s landscape and character
No two are exactly the same, which is kind of the point.

Small Details, Big Impact
Projects like this may seem simple, but they quietly shape how a place feels.
They:
  • Make public spaces more inviting
  • Highlight local talent
  • Reinforce Lemont’s identity as a creative, connected community

Next Time You’re Near Village Hall…

Take a second before you walk past.
Look at the details. The colors. The patterns.
It’s easy to miss.
But once you see it, you won’t unsee it.
